Why Content Relevance Matters for AI Search

62x

more likely to be cited when your content matches the query topic (our research, 13,140 domain-query pairs)

0.009

correlation between pure technical readiness scores and actual AI citations (r=0.009, null finding)

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews synthesize answers from 3-5 sources per query. What decides citation is not schema markup or heading structure - it is whether your content actually answers the question the user asked. Our own study found that content relevance predicts AI citations with AUC 0.915, while technical readiness alone predicts nothing (r=0.009).

We decompose your audience queries into sub-intents, check whether any page on your site addresses each sub-intent, and show you exactly where the gaps are. The 26 technical checks still run as a hygiene floor - but content relevance is the strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI Search Readiness?

AI Search Readiness measures how well your website is set up to be cited by AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot. Our Content Relevance Score decomposes real user queries into sub-intents, checks whether your pages answer each sub-intent substantively, and surfaces the gaps. We also keep 26 technical checks (crawlability, schema, rendering) as a Technical Health layer - but content relevance carries 65-80% of the weight, because our research showed that is where the signal actually lives.

How is the score calculated?

The Content Relevance Score has five components. Query Coverage (25% paid / 30% free) measures what share of your audience queries any page on your site actually answers at a useful level. Content Depth (20% / 25%) measures how well the best page answers each query. Sub-Intent Coverage (20% / 25%) checks whether the site addresses the query fan-out - the hidden information needs inside each query. Citation Reality (20%, paid only) checks whether Perplexity is citing the site today. Technical Health (15% / 20%) aggregates the 26 legacy technical checks as a hygiene floor.

Is this really free?

Yes, the full Content Relevance audit is free - no credit card, no trial period, no limit on rescans. You get the four-component score (QC, CD, SI, TH), per-query breakdowns, sub-intent gap analysis, and actionable recommendations. The €149 one-time Starter consultation adds Citation Reality (Perplexity monitoring), a human expert review within 24-48 hours, 20-40 prioritized rewrite tasks, a platform playbook, an implementation call, and one follow-up rescan. Starter is limited to 4 slots per month because it is high-touch consulting, not self-serve SaaS.

How long does the scan take?

Most free scans complete in a few minutes. The scanner crawls up to 50 pages via your sitemap, generates 20 monitoring queries from your niche, and lets you edit them before running analysis. Content relevance analysis (embedding + LLM evaluation) takes another 2-5 minutes depending on site size. The Starter consultation takes 24-48 hours for the first human-reviewed report and 5-7 days for the full plan with implementation call.

Does this work for non-e-commerce sites?

Yes. The Content Relevance measurement works for any site with content. The scanner auto-detects your business vertical (e-commerce, SaaS, B2B services, personal brand, local business, content/media) and generates monitoring queries appropriate to that vertical. The 26 technical checks also adapt (Product schema for e-commerce, Article schema for content sites, LocalBusiness schema for local, etc.).

Which AI search engines does this cover?

The Content Relevance Score measures signals that apply across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, and Claude - they all use similar retrieval mechanics (query embedding plus candidate reranking). The Citation Reality component specifically monitors Perplexity via their public API, because Perplexity is the one platform with a usable citation verification API today. Multi-platform monitoring is on the roadmap.

Will fixing my score guarantee more AI citations?

No. We ran the research ourselves. Our original 26-check technical score did not predict citations (r=0.009). The follow-up study identified content relevance as the strongest predictor (AUC 0.915), which is why we rebuilt the score around it. But we have not yet published a before/after case where a real site applied our recommendations and saw citation rate rise - that experiment is running on our own site now. What we can honestly claim is that the score measures the signal with the strongest empirical support so far. That is not the same as a guarantee.
